I’ve just noticed (after watching the latest episode of South Park – so damn funny (Spielberg and Lucas rape Indiana Jones, Butters and Cartman try to stop the Chinese from invading America), that South Park Studios are utilising CSS3 features such as text-shadow. In the picture, notice the first image is from FireFox (mac) and below it is Safari. Safari allows the text-shadow, making it look a little bit smoother. Safari is a free download from Apple for both Windows and Mac.
I’ve talked with my colleges about this and they suggest not to use any CSS3 until all major browsers support it. I politely disagree. I think we should be using CSS3 elements as much as possible. This will push other browser developers (such as Firefox, Chrome, IE) to implement the new features into the browser.
My colleges argue that if we start doing this, then clients will ask for it to be used across all the major three (FFX, IE, Sf).
Its a little bit like the chicken and the egg scenario. “we shouldn’t use CSS3 yet because most browsers dont support it, but until more people start using CSS3, browser developers will start to support it.”
I like to think that browsers that support CSS3 should be given this extra visual feature on websites because of the reward of using latest software.
- Sidenote rant here is that not enough people are upgrading to modern browsers. Disappointing to see IE6 has huge numbers.
