Holding on right until the end

This is a work thoughts thing, kinda techy… so you may wanna go read something interesting from Explosm.

One of the biggest hurdles in my line of work is the old, and very burnt out phrase “yeah but we have to conform to people using Windows 3.1 and IE 2″ etc. This is a exaggeration of course, but to the point, why should we keep holding on to unsupported browsers/applications. We should use a more aggressive approach in our work standard where we force people to upgrade to the next best, rather than spend hundreds of hours, thousands of dollars supporting some defunct browser, which would take the user less than a minute to install themselves.

Lets face it, most people have a decent computer these days, that can run JavaScript, and a compliant web browser such as FireFox/Mozilla. These applications are freeware. They weight about 8-12mb. Thats probably like, 30 seconds of download on todays broadband. Or perhaps a boring 5minutes on a 56k modem. But who ever uses modem these days?

No one does. If they are using it, they’re paying a little bit less than the cheapest broadband. The Telecos companies should make dialup free to use, to help the needy. Sure, Z-Free was free. Almost totally. That was great to use, back in 1996 or whenever.

Alls I’m saying is lets stop worrying about the older stuff. For example, does anyone start barking about the fact that the milkie doesnt support milk tokens anymore? No, they accept it and go down the the post office and exchange them for coins. To put that into context, the old geez using IE 2 should download them-self a copy of FFox.

Go do it.
