Woke up pretty late in the day today, about 1pm. After a big night out. Last night i went to a squat party where some punk/hardcore bands were playing to raise money for another squat that burnt down.
I went there with Anjas friends, Buddy (a 40+ year old who is nearly completely blind, living in NYC for more than 20 years), Mark (an irish bugger, completely mad, living here for ages) and Darcy (an attractive and interesting young woman, NYC born and bred). They were really all nice people. Very full of life. Drank some beers i bought from the corner store. then after an hour or so of listening to the hardcore band play, and after watching dudes dance throw themselves into each other, we headed down to Sidewalk (a popular bar to thee folks). It has live music, dinner and drinks. Some young dude was playing NOFX style punk music, on an acoustic guitar, which was very good.
After a few more beers i went down to Anjas bar, Ace, where she was working to see the saturday night life. Wasn’t too busy. Sat outside and met a black dude called Cliff. He was awesome. A little crazy, but cool. I asked him if he likes HipHop and he said “Dude, I’m black”… I played him some drum and bass on my ipod to see what he thought. It was Pendulum – Slam. He no like. We went back inside and had some beers and he bought us each awWhiskey. He downed his in one go, then rushed to the porcelain god. Americans love knocking back whiskey in one go. Its weird. I savoured mine while “T Bone” was indisposed. While i was waiting i met a couple of girls at the bar. One girl was very attractive, Polish. The other had a nice personality. She asked if i wanna join her and her friend for some drinks down the road. We go have some more beers, but its pretty late by this time so i head home.
The next day i wake and Anja takes me downtown to have a look at the WTC site. Its massive. Cant believe they took down those towers man. Im kinda pissed off, because i’d really like to see their height. Some loud American behind me was saying “oh i couldn’t take photos of this place, outa respect”. Pfft, what is disrespectful about taking photos of something like that? I snap happily away.
We then head across the Brooklyn Bridge. Its a beautiful bridge. So stringy and broad. Such good views from there. Took us about 20-30 minutes to walk across and dodge the people on bikes.
We head down Grimaldi’s, under the Brooklyn Bridge. Its the best pizza join in NYC. The line is about an hour to two hours long. We start waiting, and Anja has a cigarette. Then, as im thinking how long its going to take us to be seated, the owner comes down the line and says “Two people, looking for two people here uh?”. I spring to attention and yell “Ae, i got two right here, me and my friend Anja”.
“Ae, Anja put that smoke out and com’ inside uh?” he says in the thickest New Yorker ascent. Wow, that was really crazy. Anja didnt realise he heard me call her name, and wondered how he knew her name. I said he was my uncle ‘Joey’. She laughed but did not get wool pulled over her bug eyes. We sit down down in the joint and order an 18″ Margahretta pizza. Its delicious. Simply the best ive ever eaten. Costs us $14 between us. I eat 5 pieces, anja has a wimpy 3.
After dinner we tip our waiter, give thanks to the owner who jumped the line, walk out and notice the people who were still in the line. Heh, suckers…
We walk back and catch the subway back. A very nice evening.
